The Relevance Of Sindoor Daan From Ancient To Modern Times

The Sindoor Daan is not just any ritual passed down for ages. Rather, it has a glorious mythological value according to a popular story. No Indian wedding is considered complete without the final Sindoor Daan ritual.

So, want to know what the Vedic story reveals? 💭

Well, it is believed that Goddess Parvati, the reincarnation of Goddess Sati was a strong worshipper of Lord Shiva and wished to marry him. Hearing this, Naradmuni told Goddess Parvati that she have to go through hard penance to please and marry Shiva.

Thus, Goddess Parvati waited no longer and started her meditation (Tapasya) for a long time. Finally, one day Lord Shiva appeared before her which was a result of Goddess Parvbati's true intentions and dedication.

But, Lord Shiva challenged her that if she wants to marry him. Then, Goddess Parvati has to sacrifice her third eye on her forehead. Instantly, Goddess Parvati agrees upon this. But, her forehead started bleeding as soon as Lord Shiva removed her third eye from there.

From then onwards, Sindoor Daan has become a popular and mandatory ritual in every Indian wedding. It is believed that women who apply Sindoor on their forehead, protect their husbands from evil omens and Mother Parvati blesses the couple.

Not just that, the evidence of using Sindoor by married women has been established even in the Harappan Civilization Age and in Ramayana as well.

Thus, all I can say is that times might have changed, and things may have evolved. But, the significance of Sindoor Daan remains the same in our modern society even today. 😌
